Remote access - VPN
Remote access extends the benefit of
your network resources to mobile and home workers whilst
allowing data to be consolidated at a central location.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) allow organisations to connect
branch offices or remote workers to the corporate network,
cheaply and securely. Whether you want faster or cheaper
site-to-site communications or the ability to access your
applications from a laptop or PDA whilst out of the office, we
provide complete VPN solutions that are fast, cost-effective and
extremely secure.
What is a VPN?
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a network that uses the
Internet for corporate data communication. Because access to the
Internet is so cheap, a VPN provides a low-cost method of
linking offices together and providing remote users with access
to the corporate network. VPNs are particularly attractive for
companies with international offices, since the cost savings can
be enormous. Within the UK, the roll-out of ADSL means that even
the smallest companies can now implement VPNs for affordable,
high speed inter-office links and for remote users.
How does it work?
In the case of a VPN linking several offices together, each
office will have its own VPN device. Each device encrypts
network data destined for one of the other offices, and then
sends it through the Internet to a corresponding device in the
other office. This second VPN device in turn decrypts the data
it has received, and sends it on to the office network just like
normal data. In the case of remote users, VPN client software on
their desktops, laptops and PDAs does the encryption before
sending the data out to the Internet.
What sort of Internet connection do
my offices need to access a VPN?
Offices linked together with a VPN normally have leased line or
ADSL connections to the Internet.
What sort of Internet connection do
remote users need to access a VPN?
Remote users can have any kind of connection to the Internet:
modem, ISDN, ADSL, leased line, mobile phone, and wireless – if
they can get to the Internet, they can use a VPN.

ADSL
Every once in a while we see the
advent of new telecommunications technology which revolutionises
how small and medium sized businesses do business, delivering
new efficiencies and removing the barriers between you and your
customers.
We are seeing it again because of the
promises of the much-heralded online economy being brought to
life through the advent of ADSL broadband technology. ADSL will
enable you to take your business to new levels of
professionalism and efficiency.
It will allow your business to enjoy
a similar sort of online networking environment that major
corporations are used to. ADSL is fast, giving you access to the
Internet at speeds that don't even compare with traditional 28K
or 56K modems.
Just imagine downloading and
transferring large complex spreadsheets, heavily animated
graphics presentations or multi-media in real time, without
dial-up hassles, telephone line drop-outs and without tying up
your phone line. Just imagine being able to have a live email
connection or being able to network your employees and
contractors across town, or across the country.
BT's ADSL based services do not
affect the existing telephone line, customers can use voice and
fax communications simultaneously or can make a telephone call
whilst they are using your online services.
ADSL provides:
Ø
Faster 24hr fixed
Internet access. Internet
connections up to 10 times faster than using a current V90 modem
connection with Instant email and Web access
Ø
Multiple user
capability. Because of the
bandwidth of ADSL, multiple users can browse the internet and
send email with little performance difference.
Ø
Affordable.
As ADSL is a fixed cost product, so it is not based on your
Internet usage and provides predictable monthly budgeting
